Send a Piana to Havana was spawned from the "Freedom to Travel" campaign in 1993 in which
175 U.S. citizens flew to Cuba to protest "Trading with the Enemy" laws. On the passenger list,
piano tuner Benjamin Treuhaft and his toolkit. At the Museo Nacional de la Musica he puts a
Steinway grand in shape for recitals. He vows to return again.
In November of 1994 during a six-week stay in Cuba Ben is asked by the Ministry of Culture if
he has any ideas to improve the terrible condition of Cuba's piano stock. Good used pianos being
cheap and plentiful in the U.S., he proposes rounding some up and shipping them to kids and
schools in Cuba. Send a Piana to Havana is born.
